The prequistes for the Auditory-Verbal Approach The auditory-verbal approach emphasizes six important steps for developing each child's maximum potential in communication: 1) Early identification of hearing loss. 2) Early fitting of appropriate amplification; i.e. hearing aids or cochlear implant. 3) Emphasis on "learning to listen." A child who is hearing impaired will not develop the ability to listen without continuous repitition and reinforcement. 4) Regular therapy sessions with certified auditory-verbal professionals. 5) Mainstreaming in education. The child who is hearing impaired attends classes with children who have normal hearing. 6) Total family participation in the learning process.
